Chapter Ten
It was raining as the plane came in to land back in Nashville. Even though Clay wished he was still in Summer Lake, he still felt the old familiar warmth to be back in this town. It was quite a city these days, but to him it would always be his town. He’d come here like thousands of others had and he knew just how lucky he was to be one of its success stories.
“Welcome home,” Zack’s voice came through the speaker. “The tower just told us we’re going to have to wait a few minutes while a 747 takes off on runway 2L, but we’re still a little ahead of schedule. Autumn’s already here waiting for you.”
“Okay, thanks, Zack.” He turned to Adam. “I thought you were taking me home?”
Adam shrugged. “So did I.” His phone beeped and he checked the screen. “But apparently, Autumn is taking you over to Lawrence’s and Davin is meeting me in the Suburban, and we’re going to follow.”
Clay blew out a sigh. “Sometimes I feel like a package being shunted around. I’m pretty sure I’m a functioning adult, though. I prefer making my decisions for myself.”
Adam smirked at him. “You can’t blame me this time, boss. And if you’re going to try to argue with Autumn, let me know. I’d like to watch.”
Clay had to chuckle. Autumn tended to take a direct approach to getting what she wanted—forceful even at times. She wouldn’t cross him intentionally, but sometimes she outmaneuvered him. “Not today. I choose my battles.” He frowned. “But if she thinks she can dictate how much time I need to spend here …”
Adam laughed. “I think you’re safe there. She might be a little pushy but remember she’s the one who set you and Marianne up. I think tonight might be about making the most efficient use of your time here. Lawrence and Shawnee want to see you. Matt needs to talk to you. Carson could do with a little encouragement from his mentor.”
“And they’re all going to be there?”
“That’s what her text says.”
Clay blew out a sigh. “Okay. At least I know what I’m in for. I want to talk to them anyway. I need to do some writing while I’m here.”
Adam smiled. “Let me guess. You’re going into ballad and love song territory?”
Clay shrugged. He didn’t want to admit it, but that was exactly where he was going.
Autumn whisked him away to the limo as soon as they got into the terminal. Adam looked put out that he had to wait for Davin, but he was another one who didn’t like to argue with Autumn unless it was completely necessary. He’d joked with Clay before that Autumn would probably protect him more ferociously than he ever could anyway. Clay was inclined to agree with him.
“So, how was it?” she asked as Carson pulled the limo away from the curb in the pick-up area.
“It was great. I didn’t want to leave.”
She smiled and patted his arm. “That’s wonderful. I’m happy for you Clay, really, I am.
